<title><![CDATA[英語的陷阱: 陳愛迪生的 'indefinitely']]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/resserver.php?blogId=46826&amp;resource=2049879-u1819p28t3d1919959f358drw2.jpg"></a></p><p><img src="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/resserver.php?blogId=46826&amp;resource=2049879-u1819p28t3d1919959f358drw2.jpg&amp;mode=medium" border="0" alt="Picture" hspace="5" vspace="5" /></p><p>我不喜歡陳愛迪生, 甚至有點討厭他; 不過, 今天想為他說幾句話.</p><p>最近傳媒網友都在激烈討論陳生的這句:<br />I’ll be away from Hong Kong entertainment indefinitely.</p><p>因為陳生最近接受 <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSaFeXIbcaI">CNN 訪問</a>, 解釋了 (報章雜誌都形容他 '重新解釋', '重新定義', 但他以往從沒有解釋過, 何來'重新') 他這句的意思, 說是傳媒大眾誤解了他. 於是大家聽後幾乎都是一致的憤怒, 說陳 '出爾反爾', 用字 '取巧' 等。</p><p>到底 indefinitely 這個字於陳道歉聲明時跟現在訪問時的意義有否差別, 這個無從稽考. 但假如你翻開任何一本知名的英英字典 (或雙解字典) 查查 indefinite, indefinitely 的意思, 都會發現它跟 forever 的解釋完全是兩回事。Oxford 高階雙解提供的解釋是 ‘lasting for an uncertain period’, 亦即是 '一段時間裡'.</p><p>把 indefinitely 譯作 '無限期地', 再將其理解成 '永遠地', 可以說是翻譯者及大眾的一廂情願. 可能, '無限期地' 跟 '永遠地' 於中文的意思幾乎一樣, 但於英語則是十分不同的字。我隨便於 google 搜尋了 indefinitely 一字, 於是在第一頁的版面看到三篇用了 indefinitely 一字的新聞報導:</p><p>1. Army to stay in Swat indefinitely, says ISPR<br />2. Chrysler says Mexico plants idled indefinitely.<br />3. <title><![CDATA[寫作大忌]]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.tostudy.com.cn/cms/uploadFiles/2008-03-26-08-50-58.jpg" border="0" /></p><p>早兩日跟蕭 sir MSN 聊天. 談到學生的作文問題. 剛巧前一日就改了一篇文章, 裡頭的一句令我印象深刻:</p><p><font color="#ff0000">I was blissful and delighted when I found the book.</font></p><p>蕭 sir 稱此類句子 "走火入魔", 與我給予的 "獅身人面" 稱謂可說不謀而合. 這句句子包含了兩類學生常犯的作文問題. </p><p>第一, <strong>亂用生字</strong>. </p><p>可能同學都被 "同義詞" 一字迷惑. 語言裡頭, 其實是沒有意義完全相等的字. 即使是 "爸爸", "父親", "老豆" 都各帶有不同的含意. 例如三者的正式程度不同: 當代廣東話裡, "父親" 幾乎只會用於書面, "老豆" 則通常只能用於口語, "爸爸" 則兩方面都可以. 意義上, "父親" 表達了父子間較為嚴肅的關係, 而 "老豆" 則親切可愛得多.</p><p>即使近如 "空調" 跟 "冷氣機", "冰箱" 跟 "雪櫃", 都有微妙的分別. 例如它們各反映了講者的身份. </p><p>"熱" 跟 "炎熱" 是同義詞, 但假如有位學中文的鬼佬跟你說:</p><p>"呢杯奶茶好炎熱"</p><p>你一定會掩住半邊嘴笑.</p><p>學生寫作造句亦同一道理. 好地地的一個 "happy" 不用, 嫌它不夠 "high-class", 不夠型, 硬要用 "blissful", 於是寫出來的怪字怪句就令改卷人哭笑不得. </p><p>第二, <strong>語意重疊</strong>.</p><p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=1359127" target="_blank">(閱讀全文)</a></p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA["Mean" 的用法]]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://wiki.oasis-story.com/images/2/2d/D'You_Know_What_I_Mean_.jpg" border="0" /> </p><p>"What is your mean?"</p><p>我聽過無數次這句說話, 但出自一位準英語教師口中, 就真的驚訝萬分. </p><p>Mean 作為名詞, 只有一個主要的意義--"中間". 所以, 在數學上, 解作 "平均值" , 例句:</p><p>1. The <strong>mean value</strong> of this row of numbers is 100.</p><p>於是, mean 也引申出 "中庸" 的意思. 例如儒學的智慧 "中庸之道" 外國人就譯成 "The Doctrine of the Mean"</p><p>Mean 加個 s, "means", 則解作 "手段", "方法". 要注意, 這個字既可作單數用, 亦可作雙數用:</p><p>A: <em>One of the <strong>means</strong></em> to tackle the problem is by interfering the market.</p><p>B: You're right. <title><![CDATA[閱讀文章學英文生字?]]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.tasi.ac.uk/images/flickr-words.jpg" border="0" /></p><p>經常聽到學生抱怨: 文章中碰到不少新生字, 可惜一看完, 轉頭又忘了. 每篇文章都是, 看完又忘. 同學們都開始質疑: 閱讀文章可以學到生字嗎?</p><p>當然可以! 只是方法不對罷了.</p><p>首先, 閱讀分兩大類: Extensive reading 及 intensive reading</p><p>當我們閱讀大量文字, 例如閱讀小說, 劇本或參考書時, 我們不用亦不應執著當中的每個文字, 或每個句型. 我們著重的是內容, 情節, 及資料. 此時, 我們就在進行 extensive reading.</p><p>而 intensive reading 指的就是, 當你閱讀文章時, 每字每句都得經過思考. 例如教科書中第N 課的那篇散文, 就是用這種方法來閱讀. 因此, intensive reading 主要用於閱讀詩歌, 散文.</p><p>當然, 兩者並非絕對. 閱讀者可隨自己喜好, 以 intensive 的閱讀方式讀小說, 亦可用 extensive 的方法閱讀短篇文章.  不過, 一本百幾到幾百頁不等的書本, 要你探討當中每字每句, 將會相當吃力, 枯燥, 並非人人做到. 加上, 很少人會把小說, 教科書, 參考書等重覆閱讀. 就以上例子, 歸納出以下幾點:</p><p><strong>1. 選對的材料閱讀:<br /></strong>19 世紀後期, 德國心理學家艾賓浩斯 (Hermann Ebbinghaus) 發現, 人的記憶於第一次看到/ 聽到一件事時, 會於數天內呈曲線急速被遺忘. 他從實驗發現, 人只要於這幾天時間內, 每天再多看一遍或多聽一遍事件, 該事件就會轉化成我們的長期記憶. </p><p>所以, 要從文章記憶單字, 重點就是 "反覆閱讀". 是故我在以前的文章 "<a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=954191"><font color="#880000">英語營養餐單</font></a>" 中, 亦強調要 "睇戲學英文" 就一定要把同一部戲看最少兩次.</p><p>亦由於要反覆閱讀, 所以<strong>請同學們短擇短篇文章</strong>. 選好後讀三次 (或以上), 第一天讀一次, 第二天再讀一次, 第三天再讀一次. 經過反覆記憶, 文章的生字及句型, 就會自然入腦.</p><p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=1212961" target="_blank">(閱讀全文)</a></p>]]></description>

	<description><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.diabetes.org/ueimages/foodpyramid_revised2.jpg" border="0" /> </p><p>上回打了餐單的<a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=951026">前半部分</a>. 今日繼續:</p><p><strong>3. 隔日打一篇英文網誌</strong></p><p>有打網誌習慣的同學, 從今開始改用英文打網誌. 記什麼呢? 就記你平時記開的東西吧. 生活, 興趣, 什至每日時事, 感想等. 記什麼內容不要緊, 重要的是要<strong>用完整句子</strong>. <strong>忌用過於口語的生字, 句子</strong>. 亦<strong>避免用自己未完全掌握的艱深字眼</strong>. <strong>嘗試運用簡單的生子及句子結構, 準確表達自己的思維</strong>. </p><p>日記的字數亦不是重點, 總之半小時可以打完的, 已經很足夠.</p><p><strong>4. 星期六或日選一部英語電影(或類似的東西), 看兩次.</strong></p><p><strong>請選一些有內容的電影</strong>. 笑劇 (如Friends) 的笑話你未必會明, 明亦未必覺得好笑, 加上粗俗口語過多, 內容欠奉, 對口語表達沒有大幫助, 避選. 啞的笑劇 (如Mr. Bean系列) 三分鐘只有兩句對白, 每句兩個字的, 更加避選. 它們都是很好的娛樂電影, 但並非有效的英語學習材料. 除了以上兩類, 其他大部分都可供選擇.</p><p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=954191" target="_blank">(閱讀全文)</a></p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[我對廣東話英字的看法]]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p>Blogger Shrimp has provided some interesting opinion on my early entry "<a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=895262">港澳語言文化</a>". I think it's a good idea to share our opinions with the readers here.</p><blockquote><p><font size="1" color="#000000">When two cultures meet together, it is unavoidable that certain interactions will be generated. Terms of one culture will be borrowed to another culture. It is quite natural, no matter if you like it or not. We have to accept it though it surely pollutes the purity of our language. When we speak Cantonese with English mixed in between, it does not mean we want to show off our ability of mastering English.</font></p></blockquote><p><font size="1">My full reply:</font></p><p>In response to your opinion, I would like to say that it is true that language inconsistency could be generated if two cultures meet, but it is not always unavoidable. </p><p>Macau has long been using Portuguese as official language but none of my friends who speak Portuguese speak Cantonese with Portuguese mixed. To me (and probably to a lot of people here), speaking Cantonese with English words mixed within does not mean we want to show off anything; sometimes it's only because we really can't think of a corresponding term in Cantonese that we have to compromise. Words like "check" and "keep" are so deeply rooted in our culture that perhaps no other Cantonese terms can capture the essence and convey the exact meaning of them. For instance, "我check 左個戶口" may sound different from "我檢查左個戶口". Same is true when we say "幫我keep 住個file", which sounds quite "inaccurate" either we say "幫我拎住個file" or "幫我保存住個file"</p><p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=921316" target="_blank">(閱讀全文)</a></p>]]></description>

	<description><![CDATA[<p>Ensure,&nbsp;Insure, Assure &amp; Sure</p><p>有同學問到這幾個字的分別 (一直到現在才回答, 望見諒), 現在我就解釋一下</p><p>這四個字中, sure 一字是最不同的, 主要原因是它一般是一個<strong>形容詞, </strong>放在不規則動詞 verb to be 後面的, 如:</p><p>I am sure she is kind.</p><p>He was sure about his father's death yesterday, but now he is not.</p><p>至於ensure, insure 及assure 都是<strong>動詞</strong>, 正常來說不會和sure做成混淆</p><p>那這三個動詞的分別是什麼呢? 翻查英漢字典, 三個的解釋都是&quot;保證,擔保&quot;, 又是英英字典出場時間. 今次用的是Longman Advanced-learner Dictionary, 查ensure 一字, 解作 make sure, guarantee</p><p><a href="http://wilson_comix.mysinablog.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=771292" target="_blank">(閱讀全文)</a></p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Include 與 consist of]]></title>

	<description><![CDATA[<p>昨日試改了幾個我留意到的問題....其中一個我沒有強調, 就是include 和consist 的用法:</p><p>根據字典, include 定義是:<br />To take in as a part, element, or member<br />即中文的&quot;包括&quot;<br />例句有: There are six members in the team, including John and Peter.<br />重點係part(部分), 而並非<strong>全部</strong></p><p>而consist (of)的定義是:<br />To be composed of, be made up of<br />中文大約是&quot;以....構成&quot;<br />例句: A university consists of teachers, administrators and students.<br />所說明的不是部分, 而是<strong>全部</strong>, <strong>整體</strong></p><p>所以, The Selection Council includes nine members 一句, 意思包含&quot;某協會有<strong>超過</strong>九位成員, 而只提及其中九位&quot;</p><p>而consists of nine members 就是正正<strong>九位</strong>, 大概沒有其他人</p>]]></description>
